Error: 'You do not have write privileges for the null directory'

If you receive this error message when updating the software:

You do not have write privileges for the null directory.

It's because the the software registry entries on your computer are missing.

To correct the problem, you must uninstall, reinstall, and then update the software.

For H&R Block At Home 2009, follow these steps:

1. Exit the program, if necessary.
2. From the Start menu, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
4. Select H&R Block software, and then click the Remove button.
5. Follow the uninstall instructions.
6. Reinstall the federal program, and then install the state program.
7. Open H&R Block At Home 2009
8. Go to the Tools menu, and select Update The Program.
9. Follow the program's instructions to update.

For 2008 TaxCut and 2007 TaxCut, follow these steps:

1. Exit TaxCut, if necessary.
2. From the Start menu, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
4. Select TaxCut XXXX (the XXXX stands for the tax year), and then click the Remove button.
5. Follow the uninstall instructions.
6. Reinstall the TaxCut federal program, and then install the TaxCut state program.
7. Open TaxCut.
8. Go to the Tools menu, and select Update TaxCut.
9. Follow the program's instructions to update TaxCut.
